The Book of Lazarus is a four part graphic novel that serves as the origin story for what will be an ongoing series.
This pitch black comedy follows Lazarus, a listless, unhappy teenager growing up in Biblical times. He hates his life. He hates his family. But most of all, he hates Jesus, the smug womanizing miracle worker who is always hanging around the house.
After eating some bad pork given to him by a mysterious stranger, Lazarus slips into death, where he finally finds comfort in the inky blackness of purgatory. Unfortunately for him, Jesus brings Lazarus back to life. The unintended consequence is that Lazarus becomes immortal. That's the last thing he wants.
We follow Lazarus as he struggles to find a reason to live in a world full of idiots.
The Book of Lazarus was produced 100% independently. I wrote the scripts, hired the artists and collaborated with them throughout the entire process. Work began on Book One in the summer of 2012. The final edit of all four books was completed in the fall of 2014.
Ryan Gutierrez was the sole artist on all four books, bringing his unique angular, high contrast style to the project. Adam Cutrone did coloring work on the front and back covers of Book One. Ryan Gutierrez produced the rest of the color pages for the remaining three books.
Here you will find a sample of the opening pages of Book One. All four books are available in the store for $5 each. Alternately, you can purchase all four at the reduced price of $16.
